The European Truck Platooning Challenge is scheduled to land on Wednesday 6 April. This unique event involves six platoons of two trucks each, arriving at the APM Terminals, Maasvlakte II, Rotterdam.
The six truck platoons – with cutting-edge technology on board – will start as from 31 March, leaving several European cities and driving along public roads to Rotterdam. This Challenge represents large-scale testing of cross border truck platooning. Over the past six months there has been intensive and multidisciplinary cooperation/teamwork to realise this new form of mobility. The network involved comprised governmentals, road and other authorities from the participating countries (Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands and Sweden), truck manufacturers (DAF, Daimler, Iveco, MAN, Scania and Volvo), umbrella organisations (ACEA, CEDR, CLEPA, EReg and IRU) plus a range of common interest groupings and consumer bodies.
Truck platooning is a form of innovative mobility with a wide range of benefits in the areas of safety, traffic flows and efficiency. Truck platooning also reduces fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. This positions truck platooning alongside other societal shifts and increasing demand for smart trucks and cooperative driving.
All trucks involved complement their own branding with the shared message of the Challenge: ‘creating next generation mobility’.
The spotlight will be on truck platooning during the first half of April. Following the landing on 6 April the trucks will move on to Intertraffic, the world’s most authoritative exhibition of traffic technology, to be held in the Amsterdam RAI. An info film on platooning will be shown on a stand at the exhibition, together with a presentation. There will also be an invitation-only conference with experts from home and abroad, representing both public and private sectors, dealing with a Vision Truck Platooning 2025. The Informal Transport Council will be held on 14 April. And the European Truck Platooning Challenge will also have a presence at the Innovation Expo, which is being held on the same day around the Amsterdam EYE Film museum.
